In addition to his professional work, he has been an activist in various causes over the decades, including healthcare reform, environmental issues, and providing evaluations of refugees and asylum seekers for immigration proceedings.

His major focus in terms of activism has been and continues to be establishing universal government-sponsored healthcare in the United States. He is a longtime board member of Health Care for All-Washington. Their mission is to enact a single-payer healthcare system in that state

In his free time, Peter values spending time with family, regular exercise, meditation, music, reading, and socializing.

Peter received his BA and MS degrees from Northwestern University and his medical degree from Case-Western Reserve University. He completed a psychiatric residency at UCSD and a research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health. He was on the faculty of the UCLA School of Medicine.
