Health & Well-being

While San Miguel is celebrated worldwide for its beauty and hospitality, many local families — particularly seniors, people with disabilities, and those living in lower-income or rural communities — face barriers to preventative care, emergency services, and long-term medical support.

For 50 years, the San Miguel Community Foundation has supported nonprofits that address health holistically, strengthening systems that protect life, dignity, and stability across the community.

Health & Well-being

Despite the city’s many strengths, far too many San Miguel families still lack dependable access to health care, with rural communities and low-income neighborhoods feeling the greatest strain.

With many lacking social security and health-service access, families face gaps in medical coverage, preventative care, and critical services for vulnerable populations such as seniors, people with disabilities, and children. Mounting environmental stressors, including water scarcity and contamination, exacerbate chronic illness, impact nutrition, and undermine overall community well-being.

ANIMIAL WELFARE

In San Miguel, the health of our animals is deeply connected to the health of our people. When pets and street animals receive proper care, vaccinations, and safe shelter, the entire community benefits, especially children, families, and vulnerable neighborhoods.

SMCF supports animal welfare, not as a standalone cause, but because it directly strengthens public health, emotional well-being, and community safety. Our partner organizations work to reduce street-animal populations humanely, expand spay/neuter access, provide medical treatment, and promote responsible pet ownership.

PARTNER SPOTLIGHT

For generations, Bomberos y Paramédicos de San Miguel de Allende have served as one of the community’s most trusted institutions, responding day and night to fires, medical emergencies, and disasters across both urban neighborhoods and rural communities.

Under the leadership of President Carlos González, the department continues to modernize its response capacity while maintaining deep community trust.

Through recent grant support, SMCF helped equip firefighters with upgraded digital communication systems and respiratory equipment that strengthen coordination in the field and extend safety during complex rescues, ensuring responders can continue protecting lives under increasingly demanding conditions.
